I also remember the criticism and anti-blackness that photo received. It’s difficult sometimes to help our community learn and accept some truths that may be hard to understand. For instance, the fact that it is the system which pits us people of color against one another. It is the institution and systemic racism that keeps the rich wealthy and makes the poor poorer. It is the White education that we receive which makes us romanticize American values and whiteness, which makes some of us anti-black (and anti-immigration — even though we Hmong were immigrants and refuges ourselves). Nevertheless, I’m glad that many of us are socially aware and continually fight this institutional and systemic injustice.
